Safiye #Sultan was the favourite consort of Ottoman Sultan #Murad III and #valide sultan to her son Mehmed III. The identity of #Safiye has often been confused with that of her #Venetian mother-in-law, Nurbanu, leading some to believe that Safiye was also of Venetian #descent, descended from Venetian Governor of #Corfu, captured by Muslim pirates and presented to the Sultan's harem in 1562. However, new sources show that Safiye was #Catholic #Albanian (her Name was possibly Sofia), from the village of #Rezi in the #Dukagjin #mountains. In 1563, at the age of 13, she was presented as a #slave to the future Murad III by #Hüma, a granddaughter of #Suleiman the Magnificentand Hürrem Sultan. Given the name Safiye ("the #pure one"), she became a concubine of Murad (then the eldest son of Sultan #Selim II). In 1566, she gave birth to Murad's son, the future #Mehmed III. Safiye maintained good relations with England. She persuaded Mehmed III to let the #English #ambassador accompany him on campaign in Hungary. One #unique aspect of her career is that she corresponded personally with #Queen Elizabeth I of #England, volunteering to petition the Sultan on #Elizabeth's behalf. Gazi Husrev-beg was a Bosniak Ottoman sanjak-bey of the Sanjak of Bosnia in 1521—1525, 1526—1534, and 1536—1541. He was born in Serres, Greece, to a bosniak father Ferhad and a Turkish mother Selçuka, who was the daughter of the Sultan Bayezid II, making Gazi Husrev-Beg Beyazid II's grandson. In less than three years, he conquered the fortresses of Knin, Skradin and Ostrovica. He was appointed sanjak-bey of the Sanjak of Bosnia on 15 September 1521, becoming one of Sultan Suleiman I's most trusted men.A relentless campaign of conquest followed soon; the fortified towns of Greben, Sokol, Jezero, Vinac, Vrbaški Grad, Livač, Kamatin, Bočac, Udbina, Vrana, Modruč, and Požega fell at his hands. Gazi Husrev-beg played a crucial role to overcome the Christian army at the Battle of Mohács. His 10,000 Akıncıs and his irregular cavalry, composed of Turks, Bosniaks and Crimean Tatars, served as reserve soldiers in that battle. Sehzade Mustafa 1515-1553 Mustafa was born in 1515 to Suleiman the Magnificent (see last post), and his first wife/consort Mahidevran Gülbahar. For most of his life he was thought to be the heir apparent, as he was his father's first son, and universally liked. However, Suleiman showed more interest in another of his sons, Mehmed, who was the son of Suleiman's favorite and sole legal wife, Hürrem Sultan. While ruling Amasya for his father, Mustafa learned of Mehmed's death. But Mehmed was not the only of Hürrem's sons, there was also Bayezid. Hürrem's support of Bayezid made Mustafa's life difficult as he ruled Amasya. During Suleiman's Persian campaign, Rüstem Pasha told Mustafa his father wanted him to join his army. As Mustafa assembled his own army Pasha told Suleiman that his son was coming to murder him. Suleiman then ordered his son's execution. When Mustafa entered his father's tent Suleiman's guards attacked him, and after a long struggle he died at the hands of a bow string. by royalhistories
