During my nightly explorations of the four quarters, I learned that the city of Jerusalem- much less its walls -has been grazed and burned to the ground multiple times during times of power exchange. It's a miracle then that the current walls have lasted over 400 years. Construction was completed in 1538 C.E. by a team of builders hired by Ottoman Emperor Suleiman the First. The only problem? These builders forgot to enclose the original city conquered by King David in the new city walls, but don't worry: the emperor corrected their wrong... and by that, I mean he killed them, and there are still no walls surrounding the City of David.
